West Roseville Veterinary Hospital is a full service veterinary hospital treating dogs and cats in the Roseville, Rocklin, Lincoln and Granite Bay communities.  We provide complete wellness exams, vaccines, prophylactic dental care, surgeries, digital radiology and in house lab stations to care for your pets.  We also work with area specialists to provide internal medicine, ultrasound and surgical services in our clinic.

What’s new in preventative pet care this season?


Canine influenza has reached our area. There has been an outbreak in the Bay area and due to the amount of people that travel between the Roseville and the Bay area we can expect it to come to our local pets.

We now carry the two-strain influenza vaccine. This is given in a 2-vaccine series initially then an annual booster. Vaccination does not guarantee your dog won’t get influenza but it decreased illness due to the virus and decreases shedding of virus into the environment.
At this time, we are recommending that our clients who travel with dogs to the Bay area or have people visiting with dogs from the Bay area get their dogs vaccinated. It also should be a consideration for and dogs that spend time in highly populated areas such as kennels and dog parks as some of the animals present could have been exposed.
The virus is spread through aerosol (droplets that are expelled during breathing, coughing and sneezing) and direct contact. It can be carried on objects also such as grooming tools, and owners’ hands.
The signs of canine influenza are very similar to kennel cough, except they become more severe and last past a week. There can be inflammation in the sinuses, the trachea and/or the lungs. It can lead to pneumonia and can be fatal.
There is no perfect test to diagnose influenza. The quick in clinic tests that are used in people are less accurate in dogs because they don’t shed as much virus as people. Virus isolation can be done but only during the first week of exposure. Often the diagnosis is presumptive based on signs. Chest x-rays are important for diagnosing pneumonia but do not prove influenza.
Treatments are supportive, managing fever, dehydration, and secondary bacterial infections such as bacterial pneumonia that occurs from the inflammation the virus causes in the lungs.
General prevention can occur with routine cleaning such as pet clothing, grooming tools and hand washing. The virus is easily killed. The reason it is so contagious is because it can create illness quickly and spreads from dog to dog rapidly.
At this time there is no known crossover infection to cats or people from the canine strain of virus.
